When a madrasa in Haldwani was demolished, the locals retaliated by hurling stones and setting cars on fire, which prompted the police to respond with tear gas shells.

Community discontent erupted on Thursday night in the Nainital district’s Haldwani area following the demolition by the authorities of a madrasa and an underground mosque-like building that had been erected illegally on government land in the Banbhulpura area.

Officials said that the district administration of Nainital and local civic organizations worked together to demolish buildings on Nazool land, which infuriated the locals and led to a violent reaction.

Tensions quickly escalated as angry residents began setting fire to cars, building barricades, and hurling stones at police and other authorities, according to accounts. The throwing of stones resulted in injuries to numerous police officers and district administration officials.

The district administration in the turbulent Banbhulpura area has imposed a curfew in reaction to the turmoil, barricading all access roads to Control Haldwani Violence.

The state government has also ordered police to use deadly force against unruly people, allowing them to shoot rioters while they are in the area.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami requested an immediate assembly to evaluate the growing tensions in reaction to the worsening circumstances. Attending the meeting were Chief Secretary Radha Raturi, Director General of Police, Uttarakhand, Abhinav Kumar, and ADG (Law and Order), AP Anshuman

“Several officers and administrative staff were injured in altercations between troublemakers and the police in the neighborhood. Central forces and more police units are being sent out. Everyone is urged to put peace first. He told ANI that “a curfew has been implemented and that people who cause violence or damage to property will face harsh consequences.”

DGP Abhinav Kumar of Uttarakhand says, “At the moment, the situation is under control. Numerous administrative employees and police officers have been hurt; they are currently seeking medical attention at hospitals. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported as of yet. The mood is still tight, but it’s being controlled well. The incident’s perpetrators will be sought out in the following days, and appropriate measures will be taken against them.”
