Ground-Breaking Effort to Enhance Road Safety with Dedicated Two-Wheeler Lanes in India
The construction of dedicated Two-wheeler lanes in india both on highways and urban roads is a ground-breaking effort being launched by the Minister of Road Transport to enhance road safety. Considering that two-wheelers are involved in 44% of traffic accidents and fatalities in India, this proposal attempts to address the high accident rates.
Furthermore, 17% of collisions and 19% of fatalities involve pedestrians, highlighting the necessity of improved infrastructure for these vulnerable road users.
Comprehensive Plan for Dedicated Two-Wheeler Lanes in India Includes Infrastructure Upgrades and Education Initiatives
The ministry’s comprehensive plan, which was influenced by Malaysia’s successful model, calls for building underpasses and pedestrian foot-over bridges (FOBs) alongside important urban thoroughfares. A consultation paper outlining the ‘SAFE’ program also suggests holding yearly road safety workshops and adding road safety instruction to school curricula.
The projected budget for the centrally-sponsored scheme (CSS) is ₹14,000 crore, of which ₹9,948 crore comes from the central government and ₹4,053 crore from the states and union territories.
The program’s dedicated Two-Wheeler Lanes in India main goals are to reduce accidents by 70% for every 10,000 vehicles and by 50% for every 10,000 kilometers of road.With this ambitious initiative, road safety for India’s VRUs is expected to improve dramatically.
